Before Tuesdays class I read the Malcolm X text the night before not using the three read process. I understood the text, but when I read it using the three read process I understood the text better and even remembered more details than from before. The three read process really broke down the text better and faster. For me the three read process is the way to go because before I would have to read something over, and over again just to understand it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Britani, I used to reread the same text over and over again in order to understand the main ideas and details, but using this process helped memorize and pay attention to the important ideas and details in the story. If you decide not to use the Three Read Process, it helps to read the text at least three days before class, as opposed to the night before.
DeleteI also agree with you Britani, with the three read process it helped me memorize more of the little details that were in the reading. Before I would also just read and reread and I would still have troubles trying to remember details about the text.
DeleteWhile reading Malcolm X without the 3 read process, I understood the text because it kept me interested.. Once I learned out the 3 read process, it helped my reading process. It made me pay attention to detail. The 3 read process will most definitely help me when it comes to reading work I don't find interesting.
ReplyDeleteThe 3 Read Process helps break down the text of Malcolm X, not only on paper, but in the mind as well. Learning to scan the text draws out key main points through the reading, giving the ability to memorize more efficiently. Having this process in the English arsenal will be very effective for the much longer, more difficult readings.
ReplyDeleteBefore using the 3 read process, I use to just skim through the reading and read from start to finish and end up not knowing what I just read. Using this 3 read process helped me not only know what I am reading but what the main idea of this text, Malcolm X, is before I really get into the details of the text. I re-read Malcolm X with the 3 read process and learned that using this technique made me understand the text better, faster, and easier.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with what you are saying. I do/did the same thing when it comes to reading new things. Re-reading Malcolm X in the 3 read process helped bring out the main parts of the text.
DeleteBefore the Three Step Read process, I read from start to finish but did not comprehend what I read until the second time; with this method, I learned to utilize my time a a better manner.
ReplyDeleteI had a different experience. I found I had more questions using the 3 read process but I can see how the process would be useful if you have a ton of reading to do.
DeleteBefore learning about and how to use the three read process, I read without completely comprehending the text. I did not exactly know what was happening or what the main idea was. After learning how to use the Three Read Process, I better understood the main idea and details of "Learning to Read". The Three Read Process is also helpful in learning how to memorize what happened in the text efficiently.
ReplyDeleteI relate to what you are meaning Brandy. You really paint a picture. It seems a bit wordy however gives a great understanding.
DeleteBefore I had knowledge of the 3 Read Process, I would read the reading all the way through, and the parts I didn't understand I would go back and re- read. The sad part is I would never read the Introductory which is my first mistake. Learning the 3 Read Process has broaden my view on how to dissect a reading and how to get the full understanding of it.
ReplyDeletePrior to learning about the three read process I read the Malcolm X text "Learning to Read" from beginning to end. After I had finished reading i understood the basic idea but could not recall specific main details. During my reread I applied the three read process and it seemed as though the main points began to not only stick so to speak but also stood out within the text. Utilizing the three read process helped to grasp exactly what I was reading.

ReplyDeleteThe three read process was disastrous for my comprehension. While reading the Malcom X text, “Learning How to Read”, I attempted to use this method of understanding to no avail. I did not benefit from this process because my mind could not make a connection to the text by jumping from the introduction, to conclusion, to first sentence, to last sentence, and as a result I missed most of the information within the piece. It was difficult to establish a chronological timeline of the text and hard to focus on what I was actually reading because I was too focused on what I was supposed to read next. I have another type of three read process that I find more useful in my own comprehension. I will read a text through, from the title to the conclusion. Next I will read it again all the way through while I annotate and interact with the text. Finally, I will read the text once more and analyze the work using my annotations and pondering the meaning of the work. I do appreciate learning about the three read process, however I will continue to use my own method of comprehension for future reading assignments.
ReplyDeleteReading the Malcom X text, I had never used the 3 step process before and I would literally get the basic concept but never understand the full meaning, but after applying the 3 step process Malcom X was more understandable and I'm more knowledgeable about it.
ReplyDeleteI understand exactly where you're coming from Ryan, I would go through and read and get the general concept but not the points that were given to understand it fully. Now I have a better understanding on how they got their whole concept not just bits and pieces
DeleteI have always been able to read something and retain in great detail what I was reading. I score well on interpretations and summarizing what the "gist" is. However I have a rule, I always try something twice before I make a decision on whether I like it or not. I tried the 3 read process in class and I just felt like I couldnt get connected with the Malcolm X essay with it however I decided to try it again where I do all my reading. In my room in the reading chair built into the window. Still after removing distractions and trying the process over, nothing. I gained absolutely nothing that I hadn't already picked up on. Glad I took the chance and tried something new but it just wasn't for me.
ReplyDeleteWith the three-read process I came to the conclusion that in certain ways it did help me comprehend the reading better than the first time I read, “Learning to Read” by Malcolm X. Reading the first and last paragraphs then the first and last sentences of the text helped get a grasp of what the main idea of what the writing was about. This step in a way helped me prepare myself for what I was about to read. I believe that this process will benefit me more when reading about a dull subject. Before learning about this three-read process I read everything from beginning to end. If I were unsure about the author’s main point I would reread and annotate to improve my understanding. In the future I will start using three-read process more often to better my comprehension of a reading.
ReplyDeleteLike Britani, I read the Malcolm X piece a few days ago, but while using the three-read process, my eyes kept glazing over the sentences in all the paragraphs. In a way, it was almost as if I were reading the whole essay again. Maybe you guys can help me find a better way of utilizing this process in a way where it makes sense to me.
ReplyDeleteI was having the same issue. Glancing at the text, my eyes skim the whole paragraph, automatically. This 3 read process will probably help us more in future readings. Applying it to text that we have not previously read we might get more out of it.
DeleteI think the three-read process helped me in some ways. I know for sure that it kept me interested in the reading for I wanted to know what I had skipped over during the three-read process. I might find how it does help me if I do start using it when I read different texts. I might also try it if I'm looking for a source for a paper and I have a lot of reading. Mainly since this seems like it would be a faster way of finding out if it is going to be useful or not.
ReplyDeleteI find the 3-read process helpful, but at the same time confusing. Bouncing around text and reading, then re-reading helps comprehension. For me personally, I record myself reading the text, then play back the recording and follow the text in the book, at the same time(so I can highlight main ideas and supporting details or examples while listening) . It helps me comprehend the text because I am an auditory learner. I absorb information through recording my reading assignments and then replaying them back to myself. Therefore, I do find the 3-read process helpful, but also confusing considering I am set in the way I do things.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that the 3 major points or critical perspective questions are generally answered the same throughout this reading. Malcom X describes accurate and detailed hatred towards the white man for enslaving and mistreating his black community for all those years prior to his incarceration. Although he does mention his opinion several times during his story, I personally felt as If Malcom X wanted to portray even more hatred. I’m sure I will see more of these actions being displayed in future readings by him. Malcom X wanted to prove to his mentor Eli Mohammad, that he was capable of leading a new revolution towards black compensation and equality/rights.
ReplyDelete- 3 Read Process of Malcolm X -
ReplyDeleteThe 3 read process I would describe as a labored reading process. My eyes/mind naturally kept reading the 2nd and 3rd sentence of each paragraph. I would have to catch myself and force myself to stop reading between the 1st and last sentence. There were some instances the 1st and last sentence weren't enough to discern the paragraph. Example: paragraph 4, last sentence,pg 1001: "Pretty Soon, I would have quit even those motions, unless I had received the motivation that I did". I was asking, what motions? What was the motivator? What was he motivated to do? I understand there are exceptions to every rule, but I didn't like that just the same.
I want to say this process isn't for me but I suspect it required a conscious effort simply because I am not used to it. I see how the process would be useful, especially if one has a large load of reading to do, so I'm not going to knock it just yet. I will try it a few more times and then determine if I am partial to the process.
